The primary goal of abdominoplasty is to remove excess skin and abdominal fat, promoting body symmetry and proportion.
Over the years, due to significant weight fluctuations or after pregnancies, the skin in the abdominal area gradually loses its natural elasticity and becomes increasingly lax. Many people attempt regular exercise and dietary changes, but in many cases, this is not enough to eliminate the excess skin and fat on the abdomen. Therefore, abdominoplasty aims to restore the abdomen's natural contour and, along with it, the patient's self-confidence.
The procedure takes approximately 2 to 4 hours and may be performed under general anesthesia, epidural, spinal, or local anesthesia with sedation, with our preference being general anesthesia. After the overall body shape is thoroughly assessed, the surgeon makes a horizontal incision between the pubic line and the navel, creating an opening to remove the lax tissue typically from the navel down to the pubic area, with possible repair of the abdominal muscles. The goal is not weight loss, but rather to reshape the abdomen, making it smoother, firmer, and more toned. Women who plan to become pregnant should postpone the procedure to avoid compromising the results. Liposuction may be combined with the surgery in some cases.
Before the procedure, the patient undergoes an assessment of their lifestyle, health, and expectations. Depending on the consultation, the doctor may request laboratory tests, recommend or pause the use of certain medications (and may also adjust routine medication doses), and advises stopping smoking and alcohol consumption days before surgery - it is also important to avoid aspirin, anti-inflammatory drugs, anticoagulants, and natural remedies. On the day before surgery, the patient must fast for 8 hours (solid foods and liquids).
After the procedure, the surgeon prescribes the necessary medications to aid in healing and prevent infections. Immediately following surgery, the use of a compression garment is essential, as it helps reshape the body into its new contour, reduces fluid accumulation, minimizes swelling, and accelerates recovery. Lymphatic drainage massage is crucial for reducing edema, relieving discomfort, and promoting a faster recovery. The patient can typically return to work within two to four weeks, while more strenuous activities may be resumed in approximately four to six weeks. To maintain the results, a healthy lifestyle that includes regular exercise and a balanced diet is recommended.
